Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 GPS launched but is it any good than its predecessor (TicWatch Pro 2020)?

Updated: Mar 5, 2021

Smartwatch is the newest and probably the most amazing trend nowadays. Most of our work can be managed just on the wrist, all thanks to this amazing piece of technology. Now, Mobvoi has contributed to this trend by launching a new smartwatch in its TicWatch Pro lineup - TicWatch Pro 3 GPS.

If you take an avid interest in smartwatches, you must have heard somewhere, the name of Mobvoi. This company is known for its audio accessories (headphones and wireless earphones known as TicPods) and smartwatch lineups. Now, it has come up with a latest smartwatch - TicWatch Pro 3 GPS. Look, the thing is TicWatch Pro 2020 is a great smartwatch with some minor flaws and Mobvoi has launched several other successful smartwatches. So, where does the TicWatch Pro 3 stand in Mobvoi smartwatch lineups? Is it worth the upgrade? And is it better than TicWatch Pro 2020? Let's find out.

Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 Specifications

1. Processor and Dual-Display

TicWatch pro 3 is powered by the latest chipset from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon Wear 4100 Platform which was announced back in June 2020. Qualcomm claims that this chipset's CPU and memory is 85% faster, GPU is 2.5 times faster and it saves around 25% more power than Snapdragon Wear™ 3100 Platform. This is a huge deal for Mobvoi because this smartwatch is the first Wear OS watch to use 4100 chipset.

Just like other watches in TicWatch Pro series, this watch also features the dual-display technology. There are two displays in this watch (obviously) with the main one being an AMOLED display and the second one is a low-power FSTN screen which displays some basic information like time, date, step count, etc. Your watch will use the second (FSTN) display while saving battery power.

2. Physical Significance and Display

The 1.4" brilliant retina AMOLED display is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and comes with an IP68 water resistant rating. If you want to take this smartwatch to pool for swimming and stuff, then take it. Your watch would be totally fine. The dimensions of the watch are 47 x 48 x 12.2 mm. The watch sports a 22m replaceable silicone straps which are pretty soft and comfortable. Compared to previous TicWatch, the TicWatch Pro 3 GPS smartwatch is 30% lighter and is reinforced with stainless steel and high-strength nylon with glass fiber.

3. Battery

One of the most important things in a smartwatch is its battery and Mobvoi has done a pretty good job in this department. This watch contains minimal battery capacity of 577 mAh and nominal battery capacity of 595 mAh. Mobvoi has increased this smartwatch's battery capacity by 40%. It claims up to 3 days (72 hours) of battery life in "Smart Mode" and up to 45 days in "Essential Mode", which operates with the FSTN display.

4. Storage & Sensors

This watch comes with 1GB RAM & 8GB of storage (ROM). Coming to sensors, this watch has all the basic sensors one can expect from a smartwatch. It includes sensors like PPG heart rate sensor which can detect Blood O2 saturation and stress level, night infrared static heart rate sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, ambient light sensor and obviously the GPS.

5. Health Tracking Apps

One does not buy smartwatch just for display, syncing the phone or just to experience the world of smartwatches. We buy smartwatch for its health tracking capabilities. Health is the most important thing and this pandemic has proved it. So in this department, Mobvoi has introduced some new applications like TicOxygen, TicBreathe, TicZen, and TicHearing. TicOxygen can help you to track your blood oxygen saturation levels, TicBreathe can help you to manage your stress levels, TicZen can measure your stress by analysing your HRV, and TicHearing will measure environmental noise between 30dB to 120dB.

Mobvoi claims its TicSleep app is now supported in Essential Mode to save battery life at night and watch face doesn't light up at night, so to not disturb your sleep. Its TicPulse app is updated and it now has a better heart rate tracking. The TicExercise app is also updated and now it supports over 13 workout modes.

This was all about the specifications of the watch. Now we know that this watch has some outstanding specifications and it looks excellent on the paper. But this watch is little costlier than other (TicWatch)es. It is currently priced at 29,999 rupees (in India), $299.99 USD, $399.99 CAD and £289.99 GBP (UK). So, now it's time to address the question of the hour:

Is TicWatch Pro 3 any good than its predecessor, TicWatch Pro 2020?

As expected, the answer to this question is yes, TicWatch Pro 3 is worth the upgrade. It brings a whole lot of improvements in performance and battery life. Let me elaborate my point.

Look, the TicWatch Pro 2020 is still a solid watch but its processor is very outdated. It still uses the 2016 Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, which can do some basic tasks but too many applications could make it slow. But with the introduction of Snapdragon 4100, this changes. TicWatch Pro 3 can give you an excellent, smooth and a faster performance. The daily usability of this watch is increased significantly.

If you think the processor upgrade is all, the new TicWatch has to offer, then you're probably wrong. The display of this watch is enlarged, the battery life is extended but still this watch is lighter and thinner than its predecessor. Mobvoi deserves appreciation as it has done a pretty good job here. The battery life is increased over 40% but it doesn't come at the expense of the bulkiness.

Some things in Pro 2020 like sensors and google assistant were a bit of laggard (slow), but these things just got better in TicWatch Pro 3. There are several new apps (discussed above) launched by Mobvoi in this watch, which make health tracking even more easier. Google has announced a new Wear OS update and TicWatch Pro 3 will be getting that update while it is unclear whether Pro 2020 will get it or not.

There are some things about the new TicWatch which bothered me like it just has one color option, shadow/black. This watch can also get a little bulkier for some people, specifically people with thin wrists. Nevertheless, if you can invest some more money and are looking for a smartwatch under 30,000 rupees or $300 USD, you should seriously consider this watch. It's faster, lighter, has many health tracking apps & sensors and an excellent battery life.

Overall, the TicWatch Pro 3 is an outstanding watch with some very promising features. You can buy and checkout this watch from the official website of Mobvoi. Click here to visit the official page of this watch.
